Welcome to Independent Land Rover - Range Rover Service Center in Glendale - Los Angeles - Pasadena Southern California
If your Land Rover enters limp mode, it’s important to understand the underlying cause. Limp mode is a protective mechanism that is activated when the vehicle’s onboard computer detects a problem that could potentially damage the engine or other critical components.
ENGINE FAULTS
Engine faults are one of the most common reasons for your Land Rover or Range Rover vehicle to go into limp mode. Thankfully, these vehicles are equipped with a range of sensors that monitor various engine functions, and if any of these sensors fail, the vehicle’s onboard computer may activate limp mode to protect the engine and your wallet.
As well as sensor malfunctions, malfunctioning fuel injectors can also cause engine misfires and trigger limp mode. Furthermore, issues with the fuel system, such as a clogged fuel filter, can also lead the vehicle’s onboard computer to activate limp mode to protect the engine.
TRANSMISSION FAULTS
Transmission faults can also cause a Land Rover or Range Rover to enter into limp mode. This is because the transmission is responsible for transferring power from the engine to the wheels and any issues with it can potentially cause serious damage to the vehicle if not addressed promptly. When your vehicle enters limp mode due to transmission faults, it limits the vehicle’s performance to prevent further damage.
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR
The throttle position sensor (TPS) plays a crucial role in the proper operation of a Land Rover or Range Rover. This sensor monitors the position of the throttle and communicates the information to the vehicle’s onboard computer. If the throttle position sensor fails, the vehicle’s onboard computer may not receive accurate information about the position of the throttle and activate limp mode as a precautionary measure. A failing throttle position sensor can also cause issues with engine performance, such as stalling or hesitations.
MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR
This sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine and is used by the vehicle’s onboard computer to calculate the appropriate air/fuel mixture for efficient and optimal engine performance. If the MAF sensor fails, the vehicle’s onboard computer may not receive accurate information about the amount of air entering the engine, leading it to activate limp mode as a protective measure.
ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR
The engine coolant temperature sensor’s main function is to monitor the temperature of the engine coolant and provide this information to the vehicle’s onboard computer. This information is used by the computer to regulate and control various engine functions, such as fuel delivery and ignition timing, to maintain optimal engine performance and prevent overheating. If the engine coolant temperature sensor fails, the onboard computer may not receive accurate information about the engine’s temperature, and will activate limp mode.
ELECTRIC THROTTLE CONTROL SYSTEM
The Electronic Throttle Control System (ETC) monitors the driver’s accelerator pedal position and signals the throttle body to open or close accordingly. If there are any issues with the ETC, such as a faulty sensor or malfunctioning control module, the vehicle’s onboard computer may activate limp mode.
